Just like English, Irish and Maths, Physical Education (PE) is a very important subject in our school. All pupils are provided with at least one hour PE per week, and they are taught 5 different PE strands each year from Athletics, Aquatics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor and Adventure.
All teachers use the PSSI lesson plans and the ‘Move Well, Move Often’ resources to guide their delivery of the PE Curriculum. Members of staff have undertaken CPD in Physical Education during the past 12 months. New knowledge, ideas and resources have been shared out amongst staff members.
Aquatics
Each year for the first half of the term the pupils from 2nd – 6th class attend weekly swimming lessons in Athlone Regional Sports Centre.
Pupils in the junior room engaged in the PAWS Water Safety Programme. It teaches children how to be safe around water in homes, farms, pools, beaches and on our waterways.
The children learned about the various flags, how to spot dangers and obstacles, when a life buoy, life jacket or other appropriate items may be needed to save someone in trouble in the water.
Further information on PAWS can be found here http://www.iws.ie/education/paws.2925.html
Athletics
Gymnastics
Gymnastics helps children to develop physical skills like body control, coordination and strength. Gymnastics allows children to experience self-confidence through creativity, performance, and helps to lay a strong foundation for other sports that a child might express interest in.
Games
Dance
The children enjoy engaging in activities relating to the dance strand. One of the highlights of this year was taking part in the Dance Takeover. All pupils and staff came together in our school hall to perform the 'Macarena'.
