Ballintleva School is situated in the town land of Cuilleenirwan (Coillín Iriomháin) in the ancient Parish of Dysart, located in the southern region of county Roscommon. This medieval Parish was amalgamated with the adjoining ancient Parishes of Taughboy and Tisrara in 1872 to form the present Parish which comprises of Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara. Ballintleva is a place- name derived from the Irish words Bailean-tSléibhe meaning the town or place of the mountain. There are no visible signs of mountains in the immediate vicinity of the school, however there are hillocks in the general area of this picturesque rural south Roscommon region.
Ballintleva N.S. was built in 1963 and replaced an earlier school erected in 1835. It was completely refurbished in 2010. It is a catholic school established in accordance with the Irish Education Acts and in compliance with the Rules for National Schools as set out under the Department of Education and Skills. It is under the patronage of the Diocese or Elphin.
